What is Astaxanthin?

Astaxanthin is a red pigment that belongs to the carotenoid family. The substance is formed, among other marine microorganism and fish, by the microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis. In Swedish, the algae are called blood rain algae (blodregnsalg).

There are many microorganisms that produce astaxanthin, but the green freshwater alga Haematococcus pluvialis (Latin) is the main source of astaxanthin in nature. This unique microalgae can be found in shallow freshwater bodies, for example on rocks in the Stockholm archipelago. Under severe conditions of drought or lack of nutrients, the green algae form spores and begin to produce the red pigment astaxanthin.

AstaReal AB grows the microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis indoors under controlled conditions to maximize harvest and avoid contamination. The algae are cultivated under favourable conditions and in the last step the algae are stressed with reduced nutrient availability and lots of light to induce production of astaxanthin. The algae are harvested when the level of biomass and astaxanthin is optimal and then dried into an algal meal with a high content of astaxanthin. The algae meal can then be further processed into several innovative formulations that can be used in dietary supplements and skin care products.
